Hofesh Shechter

Theatre Choreographers

Hofesh Shechter is one of the most exciting contemporary artists of his generation. He creates world-class, critically acclaimed work in dance, music and theatre to universal appeal.

The Israeli born, UK-based choreographer and composer was catapulted into the media spotlight in 2007 for his iconic work IN YOUR ROOMS. Dubbed by the UK's Observer newspaper, 'probably the most important new dance work to be created in Britain since the millennium', the piece featured his trademark mix of percussive grooves, powerful unisons and raw, honest physicality, earning him the Critics' Circle National Dance Award for Best Choreography (modern) in 2008.

Since then he has premiered four large scale works to critical and popular acclaim winning the British Theatre Institute's Award for Excellence in International Dance, the Movimentos’ Most Promising Newcomer in International Dance Award, and two nominations for the South Bank Sky Arts Award. His international company, Hofesh Shechter Company, is made up of highly skilled, individually talented dancers who tour his work globally to a huge following, reaching live audiences of around 200,000. To date, they have appeared at the world's leading venues and festivals including Sydney Opera House, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Theatre de la Ville in Paris, Sadler's Wells Theatre in London, UCLA Live in LA, Melbourne International Festival, and in cities including Berlin, Rome, Tokyo, Madrid, Barcelona, Taiwan, Wellington, Vancouver, Seoul and Singapore.

Collaborations include choreography for the UK's Royal National Theatre for their award-winning production of SAINT JOAN (2007) directed by Marianne Elliot and starring Anne Marie Duff, London's edgy Royal Court Theatre on MOTORTOWN and THE ARSONISTS (2007), Channel 4 for their popular teen drama SKINS; creating the hit opening sequence 'Maxxie's Dance' and with dance companies including Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet (known for their appearance in the film THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU).  His work has been commissioned by international dance companies including Carte Blanche in Norway, Bern Ballet in Switzerland, Skanes Dance Theatre in Sweden, Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet in New York, Scottish Dance Theatre, and Ballet CedeCe in Portugal.

"Hofesh Shechter looks set to do for dance what the YBA's did for art, which is to propel it from an elite periphery into the mainstream.
Will Gompertz, BBC Newsnight
