Zia is a 21 year old bright young screenwriter who has worked in film, television and theatre. This year she won the Script Angel Inclusion Scholarship and will be developing her original pilot script WAYWARD, a colourful family drama steeped in magical realism with Hayley McKenzie at Studio 21. She also previously developed an original audio drama entitled BURN YOUR WISHES under the BBC New Creatives Scheme. Zia has just been accepted into the world renowned NFTS to undertake an MA in Screenwriting which she will begin in 2021. Zia specialises in writing drama, magical realism and sci-fi and her characterful writing has received praise for weaving the fantastical with the mundane to create rich and authentic stories that ruminate upon the strangeness of life. Zia has been writing since she was a child, but her true passion for screenwriting began when she was selected for the BFI Film Academy at the age of 18. A year later Zia was chosen to take part in the BFI Film Academy Mentorship Programme in association with BAFTA where she was mentored by BAFTA award-winning filmmaker Sarah Farinha (neé Woolner). Zia is a true self starter, and after the BFI Film Academy she went on to work in production on Netflix’s hit comedy series AFTER LIFE starring Ricky Gervais as well working at Bad Wolf across shows such as HIS DARK MATERIALS for BBC, INDUSTRY and A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES. Zia’s writing is coloured by the vibrant experiences of her multicultural upbringing which has inspired her to focus on stories that explore family and community in crisis. Zia is mentored by NFTS screenwriting graduate Haleema Mirza.
