Jon Fosse

Jon Fosse was born in Haugesund, Norway and currently lives in Grotten (Norwegian for The Grotto), an honorary residence owned by the Norwegian state. It is a nineteenth-century building located on the premises of the Royal Palace in the city centre of Oslo.

Jon has written novels, short stories, poetry, children's books, essays and numerous plays. His work has been translated into more than forty languages and his plays are performed all over the world. All his plays are published in English by Oberon Books and a selection of his poems are published in Poems by Shift Fox Press. His most important prose fiction is, or will be, published by Dalkey Achieve Press; they are also soon to publish a selection of his essays on literature and theatre entitled WHEN AN ANGEL GOES THROUGH THE STAGE AND OTHER ESSAYS.

Jon has been the recipient of numerous awards including Hedda's Prize of Honour, the most prestigious award in Norwegian theatre and Austria’s Nestroy Prize for Best Author. In 2005 he was made a Commander in the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav and in 2007 he was made a Knight in France’s National Order of Merit. Jon was awarded the International Ibsen Award, 2010 and received The European Prize for Literature in 2014.
