Stephen Jeffreys

Stephen Jeffreys was an internationally acclaimed playwright whose work includes VALUED FRIENDS, Hampstead Theatre (1989), winner of the Evening Standard and Critics' Circle Award for Most Promising Playwright; THE CLINK, Paines Plough (1990), for whom he was Art Council Writer in Residence from 1987-1989 and THE LIBERTINE (Royal Court Theatre, 1994, directed by Max-Stafford-Clark, & Steppenwolf Theatre, Chicago, 1996, directed by Terry Johnson and starring John Malkovich). Stephen's screenplay version of THE LIBERTINE directed by Laurence Dunmore was released in 2005 starring Johnny Depp.

Other plays include A JOVIAL CREW (RSC); A GOING CONCERN (Hampstead Theatre); HARD TIMES (adapted from Dickens); I JUST STOPPED BY TO SEE THE MAN (Royal Court Theatre, Steppenwolf and Geffen Playhouse, LA); LOST LAND (Steppenwolf Theatre); THE ART OF WAR (Sydney Theatre Company) and BUGLES AT THE GATES OF JALALABAD, part of the GREAT GAME series of plays about Afghanistan presented by the Tricycle Theatre. His revised version of THE ALCHEMIST, complete with his own original prologue, opened at the RSC in June 2016 and transferred to the Barbican Theatre, London. A revival of THE LIBERTINE starring Dominic Cooper came to the West End in 2016.

DIANA, Stephen's biopic of Princess Diana directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel and starring Naomi Watts, was released in 2013.

Stephen was Literary Associate for the Royal Court for eleven years and a renowned playwriting teacher and mentor. He passed away in September 2018.
