Carl Miller’s plays and musicals include the internationally produced Emil and the Detectives (originally staged at the National Theatre), Ostrich Boys (National Theatre Company of Korea and Belgrade Coventry) and Wasted (Southwark Playhouse and The Best Play Company Korea, music by Christopher Ash). Other plays have been commissioned and produced by theatres including Birmingham Rep, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Trestle and Unicorn.
Carl’s other writing for musicals and theatre includes The Naughty Carriage on the Orphan Train (British Youth Music Theatre, Dundee Rep and Birmingham Hippodrome, music by Luke Saydon), White Suit (Greenwich and Docklands International Festival, music by Helen Chadwick), A Little Princess (The Other Palace, music by Marc Folan) and Spellshock (New Visions New Voices, Kennedy Center, Washington DC, music by Ravel).
As a teenager, Carl was part of the Framed Youth lesbian and gay video group (BFI Grierson Award) and he has been exploring LGBTQ+ characters, stories and themes throughout his career, notably in the plays Red Fortress (Unicorn), Janet and Jane (Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds), The Same Language (Hotbed Festival), The Last Enemy (Gay Sweatshop) and theatre and film project I Am (Bobby Tiwana / Tiger Strut, Sheffield Theatres, South Bank Centre and touring),
Carl wrote a pioneering mixed live / virtual reality version of Frankenstein for the National Youth Theatre and continues to create innovative projects combining live and virtual performance including Is it any stranger (Watershed Bristol) and Guise (Guildhall School of Music and Drama).
He originally trained as a director at the Royal Court on the Regional Theatre Young Director Scheme and has been Artistic Director of the Royal Court Young People’s Theatre, an Associate Director of Birmingham Rep and Unicorn, and Writer in Residence at the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds. He is a member of Mercury Musical Developments’ Advanced Writers’ Lab.
