Davey Anderson is a Scottish artist working across music, text, dance and theatre.

As a Composer and Music Director he works regularly with dance company Barrowland Ballet. Recent projects include: Chunky Jewellery (Tramway), Too Close To The Sun (Edinburgh International Children’s Festival), The Gift / The Unexpected Gift (Best Production for Children and Young People at the Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland) and Family Portrait (Edinburgh Fringe and world tour).

Davey has also created music for a number of shows with the National Theatre of Scotland, including: Enquirer (a site-specific performance in disused media blocks in Glasgow and London), Peter Pan (King’s Theatre Glasgow, Barbican), Be Near Me (Citizens Theatre, Donmar Warehouse) and Black Watch (Edinburgh Fringe and world tour).

Other work as Composer and Music Director includes: Life is a Dream (Lyceum Theatre), Americana: A Murder Ballad (Pepperdine, Edinburgh Fringe) and Dublin Carol (Donmar Warehouse).

As a Playwright, his work includes: The Abode (Pepperdine, Edinburgh Fringe), staged as Freedom City by Cia Artera in Brazil, Scavengers (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Cia Artera), The Static (ThickSkin), True or False (Theatre Uncut), Police State (Theatre Dot, Istanbul), Clutter Keeps Company / Dadesodemquenãoandasó (Birds of Paradise, Cia Artera), Playback (Ankur), Liar (Citizens Theatre), Rupture (Traverse, National Theatre of Scotland) and Snuff (The Arches, Edinburgh Fringe).

His short play Blackout, written for the Citizens Theatre Young Company as part of the National Theatre’s Connections project, has been performed by ThickSkin, Synergy, the Lyric Theatre in Belfast, the Welsh National Opera and a number of other companies.

Davey was Co-Writer and Associate Director of Anything That Gives Off Light (The TEAM and National Theatre of Scotland), which premiered at the Edinburgh International Festival before touring Southern Appalachia and New York. He was also Co-Writer of Première neige / First Snow (Théâtre PÀP, Hotel Motel, National Theatre of Scotland), a collaboration between Scottish and Quebeçois theatre makers, which won a Fringe First and toured to Montreal.

Davey adapted and directed the world premieres of The War Hasn’t Started Yet by Mikhail Durnenkov and Thieves and Boy by Hao Jingfang (National Theatre Scotland, A Play, A Pie & A Pint). He also adapted and directed Strolling Through The Meadows, an extract from Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh performed in British Sign Language by Brian Duffy, as part of the National Theatre of Scotland’s Scenes for Survival.

He Co-Wrote and Co-Directed Mixter Maxter (National Theatre of Scotland, St Magnus Festival), devised and performed by Kirkwall Grammar School students, along with local artists and community members, in a disused building temporarily transformed into an arts venue.

As Dramaturg, his work includes: And I’ll Huff (Barrowland Ballet), Act of Repair (Scottish Youth Theatre) and Ménage a Trois (Claire Cunningham, National Theatre of Scotland).

He was Director and Dramaturg on Solway to Svalbard (The Stove), combining live music played by a chamber ensemble, with a tryptic projected film and immersive sound.

Davey is currently working as Writer and Dramaturg on Opening Event: Where To Begin with Pinwheel and the Edinburgh International Festival. He is also developing a new show with Barrowland Ballet called Wee Man, working as a Dancer with a large ensemble of men and teenage boys.

Coming up, Davey will be Co-Music Supervisor and Co-Orchestrator on Wild Rose (Lyceum Theatre, Caledonia Productions).
