Sophie Max is a bright young London-based writer and actor who studied in New York and then at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. She is passionate about telling female-led stories which tackle complex themes in a bold, authentic and hopeful way. Their work explores subjects like identity, trauma, grief and healing through a female lens, and discusses the nuances of her own identity and history as a queer Jewish woman.
Sophie has written (and produced) several short films, most notably the multi-award winning drama THE WHOLE TRUTH, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime. Her other short films include female-led thriller IT LOOKS BEAUTIFUL FROM HERE and LGBTQ+ comedy-drama NEW AGE.
Sophie has recently written a powerful Holocaust drama on spec, VIENNA, inspired by her great grandparents’ experiences, as well as a contemporary drama about cycles of abuse in classical music, VIRTUOSO, which won the Top Recommended prize in ScribeLounge's Elevate Screenwriting competition. Sophie was a participant on Tall Story Pictures' LGBTQ+ Writers Scheme, where she further developed VIENNA. Simultaneously, she is developing a number of other original projects including: SHIDDUCH, a romantic comedy-drama series about healing and new beginnings; CARE, a medical drama series exploring struggling to do good in a struggling CAMHS department; SECOND CHANCES, a romantic comedy feature film; and is co-writing comedy-thriller feature film SONYA inspired by Chekhov.
On the theatre side, her play TIL IT STOPS (which was developed at Culture Lab in NYC and had a rehearsed reading at London's Cockpit Theatre) was Longlisted for the Women’s Prize for Playwriting, the RSC’s 37 Plays Project and Shortlisted for Bold Playwrights. Her next play, BANNED, premiered at the Bush Theatre in Bomb Factory Theatre's showcase of new women writers in April 2025 and was produced in June 2025 at the Hope Theatre in a season of new queer plays.
