Yvonne Zhang

Yvonne Zhang is a writer-director whose films inhabit the space between the surreal and the intimate, drawing from early memories of her mother’s nightly visions of death. Rooted in traditions of magical realism, her work explores dream logic and emotional dissonance in a world shaped by digital mediation.

Her short film CARRION (2022) screened internationally at festivals including SFFILM, PÖFF Shorts, and Tampere Film Festival, where it won Best Genre Film. Her second short, SWEETWATER AQUARIUM (2024), premiered at Vienna Shorts and screened at LSFF and the Norwegian Short Film Festival, winning the Golden Chair for Best International Short.

Yvonne studied Fine Art at Central Saint Martins, holds a BA in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh, and earned her MFA in Directing from the American Film Institute. Her debut feature is currently in development through the 2025 TorinoFilmLab ScriptLab.

She is the current Filmmaker-in-Residence at Somerset House, London.
